This event takes place at the Kent Event Showground at Detling near Maidstone. This was only the 2nd year but it looked as if it had been going for a great deal longer. It is organsied by the team behind The Vineyard Magazine who have done an outstanding job. Wine GB host their seminars.
As you will see below the show covers everything you could possibly want to buy in setting up your vineyard and making or selling your wine.

Education |
As well as all this hardware and technical stuff, there were seminars and tastings of over 100 wines, half of which were sparkling and half still - all from England and Wales.
Normally Wine Fairs only comprise seminars and tastings but we think it essential that anyone interested in wine should have some idea of what it takes to make it both in the vineyard and in the winery. This show gives you the opportunity to get an insight into what is involved and to rub shoulders with not only the people who make the wine but also those who toil in the vineyard.
Our friend Sam Doncaster was officiating at the Freytag stand. |
We covered only the still wines of England and Wales but before we report on those we should mention the two vine nurseries who had come to the show from abroad, Rebschule Freytag and Pepinieres Guillaume
Freytag actually brought some of their wines for tasting at their stand; these were the only foreign wines at the fair as far as we could tell and very interesting they were too.
Rinot is a Czech hybrid from Merzling and Syve Villard x Pinot Gris. Absolutely delicious. This should catch on.
The other wine we tasted was a Cbaret Noir (formerly Cabernet Noir) from Alois Metz (Pfalz). Cabaret Noir already has caught on so much so that Mr. freytag wasn't sure he would be able to provide us with even a small amount to plug vineyard gaps next year.
Freytag provide resistant vines to numerous vineyards in Germany and abroad. They had brought wines from clients using the following grape varieties;
Sauvignac
Cabernet Blanc
Rinot
Cabernet Jura
Pinotin
Cabaret Noir
Pepinieres Guillaume was founded in 1895 at Charcennes in the Franche Comte not far from Besancon. They have sister nurseries in Chile, California and Argentina. With publicity material in English and a presence at the show they are clearly a player here in the UK.
As well as the usual international varieties, Guillaume's list of grafted varieties includes
Cesar
Poulsard
Courbu N
Grenache Gris
Petit Meslier
Sacy
Petit Courbu
Arbanne
Camaralet
Arinarnoa
Arriloba
Caladoc
Egiodola
Ekigaina
Ravat 262
Isabelle
Landot 244
Excelsior
Olivette 9110
and the European varieties (again, only the less well-known ones)
Ancelotta
Brachetto
Cornalin
Diolinoir
Fumin
Feteasca Neagra
Gamaret
Humagne Marsigliana
Mayolet
Nerello Capuccio
Petit Rouge
Pugnitello
Amigne
Carricante
Feteasca Alba
Petite Arvine
Vitovska
Quite a list!
There was so much to take in at the Vineyard and Winery show that we will report on our tasting of still wines in the next post.
