Penfolds is unique. They not only make wonderful wine, they have a world-wide re-corking service for their finer wines and now they are making Champagne in partnership with Champagne Thienot and a series of wines called 'One' whose bold method is to blend wines from different regions of France, California and Australia
This 'One' is from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. The grapes having come from different French regions, it can only be called a Vin de France.
Other 'Ones' with the same grapes are from vineyards across California and Australia. Cabernet Sauvignon, Marselan, Sirah, Merlot and Grenache have also been blended in another cuvee. The design is by NIGO, the designer of Kenzo etc.
But for us, the best was the Penfolds Champagne. Yes, a real Champagne from a cuvee selected by Penfolds and made by the house of Thienot. It is truly excellent. Refined and well balanced. Available from Waitrose at just over £40 or taking advantage of their frequent 25% off 6 bottles or more, just over £30. Bargain!
The thorny question of brands here raises its ugly head. a person receiving this handsome box with the name of Penfolds a great deal larger than that of Champagne and Thienot hardly visible at all will think this is a bottle of Aussie fizz surely? For us this Champagne is a whole lot better than the usual suspects.
Et toujours:
